Review of the Various Artist Contribution to Son Of God Soundtrack

     At the end of this month on February 28th 2014, the anticipated film Son of God will commence in theatres. Highly successful Hollywood producer, Mark Burnett is excited about people in remote areas around the world that will have access to the gospel through this film. He and his wife were “warned” by people not to switch to producing Bible based films, right before creating the acclaimed mini-series The Bible. Currently that same series which got a broad spectrum of viewers in the United States is number one in Hong Kong; and following as the number one series in England on Channel 5. Those who warned them are now choking back dust by the popularity among diverse groups of faith-based morally uplifting positive movies.


     Regardless of religious affiliation people are intrigued by the life of Jesus Christ. Since His walk on Earth, people have been perplexed, blessed, changed and intrigued by the character He portrayed and life that He lived amongst some who followed Him, most who mocked Him, and the majority who crucified Him.

     Word Records has teamed up with the film company, Light workers Media and formed a compilation inspired by The Bible mini-series and the epic film release Son of God on the 28th. Releasing on January 21, 2014 this multiple-award winning artist collection makes an excellent purchase for your listening pleasure. Featuring some familiar Christian Radio tunes along with a few never heard before creations that will surprise you, it’s one that you can leave in rotation for quite some time.

     This album has reaffirmed my applause for the beautiful Francesca Battistelli as she belts out a hauntingly stirring performance in the first track “Oh, Son of God”. I am uncertain if it is on radio or not because I had never heard this song until reviewing the CD but it was like an orchestra in my heart strings. There is a passion that resonates deep in the soul of one who has been made whole in Christ when such evoking melodies are birthed as this.

     Chris August follows in with, “Jesus, Savior”, which is heard broadly on Christian radio. With on spot vocals and lyrics that touch the hearts of listeners you simply cannot lose. “Just call him Jesus, Savior, Son of God; the King of Kings. Our salvation has a name.” He states the simple truth in this song, but it’s the truth that has changed the world.

     One group I have always enjoyed For King & Country, will vocally delight your ears and lyrically touch your heart in their delivery of “Baby Boy”. "As angel’s sing and the Earth rejoices “Endless hope and relentless joy started with a Baby Boy".

     Inspired by the life of Christ, the epic motion picture The Son of God and the mini-series, The Bible, the sequence of this album is spectacular. “He Said” performed by Group1 Crew is a quickening encouragement to all.

     As the body of Christ we go through things that are heartbreaking at times. Things we can’t understand can knock us off course or make us lose sight of the prize that awaits us. “He Said” helps you refocus on the promises of God and the power His Word gives us in our lives.

     One of the most valuable songs for me personally was poetically demonstrated by the sweet and humbly talented Dara Maclean. “Our Only Hope” authenticates the relevance of God and the love of Christ that was personified by God for mankind when He gave Himself for all on the cross in place of our penance. These words speak volumes;

“You’re healer to the broken. Shepherd to the lost. Father to the orphan adopted by the cross. There’s comfort in your arms, it’s where our healing starts. Our only hope is Jesus.”

     Sidewalk Prophets, come barreling out with “Keep Making Me”.  Sometimes when God is getting ready to move us into something greater the enemy wants to jump in and try to steal our faith away by attacking us in areas that are the most important to us. God says in His word that He is closest to those who have a broken and contrite spirit.

   
     This song carries three verses starting with the following pleas, “Make me broken, so I can be healed.” “Make me empty, so I can be filled.” And last but not least, “Make me lonely, so I can be yours.” From a heart that wants to be surrendered fully over to the Lord’s will we come to this place in prayer often not realizing how much we rely emotionally and physically on people and things rather than on God until He answers and begins to let them get taken away.



     Being reformed in Christ is never an easy transition and often times calls for repeat visits in order to renew our hearts and minds in the calling that He places on our lives. He doesn’t call us to a certain position or job; He calls us to become the person we are meant to be in Him. Point of Grace, beautifully echo’s this in “Only Jesus”.



     Repentance is not a once in a lifetime experience at the cross. It is a daily renewing and searching our hearts to make ourselves pure before the unspotted lamb of Christ through forgiveness which only Jesus has the power to give and the spirit to grant lovingly.

     Jason Castro, who recently dropped his dread locks like a hot potato delivers the unwavering “I Believe”. Following the same trust pattern that many of us have had to do in our lives; trusting God no matter what the situation looks like to us carnally.

“And in times of struggle Father this I know. That on this narrow road I never walk alone. And though I don't understand, tell me who can know your plans? And when I cannot see - I believe.”

     Considering I was unfamiliar with the bands, Everfound and Love and the Outcome they were the two biggest surprises for me. One of the reasons I love compilation albums I suppose, is that your musical library gets to check out something new that you are unaware even exists. I am sure I have heard other songs by these talented artists but I never made a connection to their names until now.

     In “God of the Impossible”, Everfound brings a fun revelation to how He can use any of us to do amazing things that even we cannot begin to fathom if we simply believe and are obedient. My favorite part of this song rests in these lyrics.

“Empty bones and a thirsty soul, dreaming for more than the life I have known. Until I tasted a burning coal, and my guilt was erased, and my sin was atoned!”

     Love and the Outcome, also bring a lighthearted joy to the table with "He is With Us." Proclaiming that no matter what may come our way and no matter what storms we face we can trust Our God, for He is with us always. “Our faith is sealed, our hope is real, come what may we’re not afraid”.

     “Jesus Move”, performed by Big Daddy Weave is an engaging call to worship among the saints calling the power of God down upon our lives allowing His love to come alive in each and every one of us for His glory.

     Closing out this affirming classic Meredith Andrews, releases a sweet aroma in “The Gospel Changes Everything.” Jesus made a way so we could all come just as we are to our God. The cross was a rescue mission; for our souls redeemed by the Gospel, which Christ became in the flesh. The Son of God made a way so all could come to the Father through Him.

      Many of the award winning artists on this album will be featured guests on The Bible Tour 2014 starting March 20, 2014 in Lake Forest, California. What Britt Nicole Delivers Is Golden

     Internationally known to top the charts in the UK and throughout the US, Britt Nicole is no stranger to the music industry. Her sophomore release, The Lost Get Found debuted at number one on the Christian Album Billboard Charts and produced three top ten singles.

    On March 26, 2012 she will be releasing her third album, Gold.  It is ironic to me that God’s perfect number is three and this album introduces itself as her best production to date.

     Britt was born in North Carolina on August 2, 1985. Three short years later she began to utilize her vocal gift from Godin her home church. She continued to blossom, singing on her local church television program and gracing the prestigious Carnegie Hall stage with her High School’s advanced choir. In 2011 she carried a nomination for “Female Vocalists of Year” through the Dove Award Association.

     With two chart-topping albums in her pocket Nicole has accumulated a large fan base. I have a feeling on March 26, that number is going to increase. The vocals on Gold could be compared to secular artists like Adele and Katy Perry. Lyrically speaking it’s more of a combination between Dara Maclean and Royal Tailor. With intricate beats that will get you on your feet and lyrically and vocally matured vibe this is definitely not a par for the course addition to her discography.

     All This Time, which was the first release has been steadily remaining on the Billboard Charts. Any one who has truly been transformed by the love of God, could very well be wiping a tear away as this song reminds you how great He has truly been. Lyrically expressing, “I hear these people asking me, how do I know what I believe? Well, I am not the same me, and that’s all the proof I need. I felt love, I felt your grace, you stole my heart that day.” Sometimes we take for granted how far He has brought us from where we used to be and this song is a heartfelt reminder.

     If you are like me, you usually have one or two favorites off of each album you buy. However, on this album it’s extremely difficult to narrow that down. As I was in my car listening to the title track, Gold (video below) I did have a moment. I felt like teenager who should have been wearing a big pair of white shades like the Go-Go Girls used to wear, cruising around jamming out with the windows down. I wasn’t too concerned that I probably looked ridiculous to others, considering I am almost forty.

     The mere fact was that I was enjoying it immensely. There is a brief segment toward the end where it appears one of the Spice Girls took over her microphone. As she breaks out, “So don’t let anybody tell you that your not above, and don’t let anybody tell you that you’re not enough, yeah there are days that we are feeling like we’re messed up but the truth is that we’re all diamonds in the rough”. It’s easy to hear why she has gained a good-sized fan base in the UK area.

     Look Like Love is very lyrically powerful. Reminiscent of the popular release from Revive , titled blink. Britt shares the importance of taking time to share with others the love of Christ. Instead of a ballad as produced by Revive, she delivers a provoking feel good message to utilize your joy and happiness to lead others to the saving knowledge of the cross. The design of this type of song is to awaken you spiritually to be about your Father’s business. Doing the work of the ministry and at the same time drawing your attention to spending time with family and friends. These things are pertinent to us during this day and age.

     We all struggle and sometimes get discouraged, whether we have others supporting us or not. When the walls around us begin to crumble, we have to bury ourselves in faith. Who You Say You Are, is a fantastic composition and the message is encouraging to each and every single person who has trusted God to live for Him. "I’ll still be smiling when the sky is dark, cause I believe that you are who you say you are."

     Another addictive number Ready or Not has the same effect on me as Gold. It tends to be pushed up on volume control as I drive down the road with the breeze blowing through my hair. Vocally speaking I feel this song really puts Britt’s voice in a pocket where she truly sounds the most unique. I am uncertain who performs the rap section, but it slides right in there and just adds to the pure impeccable production of this piece.

     Breakthrough is a victory driven melody that expresses someone putting their foot down in personal areas of their life. A destiny waiting where one is meant to be free and they are tired of the devil trying to bring them down. “You can’t make me fear. I’ve cried too many tears. Yeah I’ve had enough now I am gonna call your bluff.” The song does engage you in an electronic mix appearing to be the transitional moment for the breakthrough.

     Stand is an encouraging tune about whatever one is facing, as long as we stand in faith knowing He is with us we will be fine. The Sun Is Rising, is one of the softer additions and really anchors on the essentiality of keeping your eyes on Christ.

    Another electronic vibe awaits you in Amazing Life. This song returns a few tracks later with a remix version that adds more spice to the already spiritual adrenaline driven track.

     Still That Girl and Seeing For The First Time are both beautiful additions to this album and a great way to draw it to a close. You will find great similarity to the passionate moments that Kari Jobe shares on her up-tempo ballads. I think these two songs will get the most airplay if they are released as singles. Seeing For The First Time, is undeniably one of the best songs vocally on the entire album. You can also feel her expression of heartfelt adoration come through and it's crisp and soft and simply spotless.

     There is a bonus track on the album titled Straight For Your Heart, which is a message from the throne of God to each and every one of us. “Your heart beats, but it is just keeping time. You’re living but you don’t feel alive. The world outside is turning, while yours is lying still, in a cycle spinning spiral holding you until. Right here, right now I am coming straight for your heart.”

     I am about two listens away to the bonus track achieving number one status in my book. That being said, the entire album is simply great. Immanently the best album created by the lovely young Britt who truly just wants to express her love for God to others in a fun moving way. If you know young people who like the sound of Kate Perry, Lily Allen, or Kate Nash and you would like to influence them with a message of hope and faith that they can relate to musically buy them this CD. I believe you could change their lives with that simple gesture. If you personally enjoy Group 1 Crew, Royal Tailor, Dara Maclean or Kari Jobe, or if you are a CCM fan at all, on the 26th do yourself a favor and invite her sounds of music into your heart.

     Bottom line, ready or not she is coming, she is golden and she is knocking it out of the box!

Winter Jam 2012 Artists Took Time Out For Interviews

     Fans throughout many different cities standing in freezing cold temperatures and downpours of rain await the explosive performances as the annual Winter Jam tour celebrates it’s 17th year. Each band brings to the stage life changing melodies and messages of hope geared toward youth, yet spanning across every generation from every angle. From the heart felt worship of Kari Jobe to the heart pounding delivery of Billboards 2011 top Christian artist Skillet, the diversity of talent and genre of music draws thousands of expectant guests each year. Many leave wishing they had arrived a few hours earlier to avoid being one of the many turned away due to venue capacity limits.

     Aside from Skillet and Kari Jobe, transcending host NewSong is joined by Sanctus Real, Peter Furler(former lead for Newsboys), Building 429, Group1Crew, illusionist Brock Gill and national speaker Nick Hall. The pre-jam session includes performances by the beautiful Dara Maclean as well as For King and Country and We As Human.

     This is not the first year they have turned hopefuls away at the door. For three decades Newsong have traveled together sharing the love of God and the message of hope with all that have opened their hearts to hear the good news. Speaking with Billy Goodwin, it is clear that they do not take lightly the opportunities that God has blessed them with. The gift and provision that He has bestowed upon their lives for ministry is an open blessing that God has poured out on their lives.

“I just cannot believe that God has allowed us to do this for so many years. You know everyday I wake up I just say thank you God for letting me do this one more day. I just pray He continues to let me do it as long as I breathe.” -Billy

Billy Goodwin of NewSong

     When Newsong started this tour seventeen years ago, it was just Billy and a few other guys and they would sing using soundtracks. They rented a venue in South Carolina and did not sell any tickets in advance. It was a three-dollar entry fee at the door and they had to turn away two thousand people that year.

“It was amazing to us what God did, we really had to seek His wisdom after that and find out what it was He wanted us to do. So, for the next couple of years we added a few more artists and just called it the January Jam.”-Billy

     Last year the highly anticipated Winter Jam turned into one of the largest tours including the secular music industry. Unsurprisingly, Pollstar has voted it as the highest attended tour of the first quarter for 2012.

     I asked Billy what his thoughts were on why this tour seems to bring larger turn-outs than pre-sale concerts.

“Many factors play into the turn out. Local promoters generally take over and run the show and we just come in and do a concert. Many people cannot afford a lot of the higher price venues that use promoters and I also believe that God wants to keep us grounded. He wants us to stay faithful no matter how big or small the crowd is.”-Billy

     One thing is certain the Winter Jam crowds are huge! For the talent that is offered on this tour, ten dollars is a steal. However, it does come with a bit of a price consisting of hours in line in very cold temperatures and downpours of rain. Thousands continue being turned away because so many people show up to get in. To anyone planning to attend one of the future shows I would recommend at least arriving two hours early. Also, you can purchase the advanced VIP tickets that guarantee you an entry. The cost is a bit higher but you won’t have to worry about being a part of the turn-away crowd.

    Speaking of crowds, the crew on this tour produced by premier productions is so diverse my curiosity led me to ask Billy how they all fit together.

“We are having a blast! Show attendance is up, which transfers over to the increase in numbers we have seen for people giving their lives to Christ. It feels like we are just a big traveling church. These artists on this tour are really putting everything they have out there on stage, and Skillet really puts on a great show and John Cooper (lead singer) is really just a great guy and getting to know all of them has just been great.”-Billy

     A reflecting crowd of youth, grandparents, toddlers and middle-aged join together to share in the one purpose at the heart of the tour. I asked Mr. Goodwin the key element to reaching young and old alike as a band staying contemporary through three decades of ministry.

“We have really been able to connect even through the generation gaps simply because the heart of our message always stays the same. It’s about the purpose of Christ and how He can change your life. It’s a message that has transformed each of our lives and we are just sharing with people what it has done for us. As far as the diversity of the fans, you know we try to keep the energy high, reaching a wide spectrum of ages.”-Billy

It will be interesting to see what Spring brings for Newsong considering they plan on finding some “free time” in the midst of touring to work on putting together a new album. I joked with Billy because it amazes me how people put all their faith and trust in God for His provision basically living on the road.

“We are thrilled to be doing what we love and have the opportunity to minister into the lives of others. It’s also our way of supporting our families so we are very thankful to those who come out and support us.”-Billy

     One person who certainly knows the depths of laying it all on the line to walk in obedience is Peter Furler. Simplifying his life with wife Summer, they sold all of their belongings and moved to the gulf of Florida in a RV.

     This happened after his supportive exit from Newsboys as lead singer. After doing over a hundred shows a year for over a decade Peter felt it was time to slow things down and just be in the moment, agenda free. During this time of rest God revealed a new thing to him.

“Artistically and creatively, I began see that God didn’t make the horse to win at the races, but for his pleasure – to watch it run,” Peter explains. “I had a definite yearning to get back to nature, to express myself creatively, to do something just for the joy of it.”-Peter

     Since Peter and his wife Summer are slowing down to enjoy the simple things of life, I asked him if they had plans on having children and if he thought that would cause them to settle in somewhere instead of continuing in music ministry.

“My wife and I love kids and we are not really the settle down type of people you know. I don’t think having kids would cause us to stop doing what we are doing. We are out here on tour now with John from Skillet and others with their kids. These kids love being on tour with us and they are great with their kids, so I doubt it would change anything for us. You have to create proper balance though. Family comes first, before the music. Sometimes people make the mistake and put their own ambitions and desires before family and that’s just wrong.”-Peter

     Even though Mr. Furler no longer sings lead for Newsboys, he is a great friend with all of the members. Recently he worked on an album with previous co-producer Steve Taylor who is currently working on a movie production called Blue Like Jazz set to release April 13, 2012 which is why the album has yet to be released. Instead of holding the lead vocals on this production, Peter actually returned to his original Newsboys position of drummer and back up singer along with friends Jimmy Abegg on guitar and John Painter on bass.

     The creative bug bit Furler while working on this project which is what caused him to start his solo project On Fire released in June of 2011. I asked Peter if he has any idea what lies ahead for him after his solo album tour.

“Not sure really. I mean I love making and recording music. I don’t have any grandiose plans of world domination, just taking one day at a time and just stopping to enjoy the process. I do hope to make another record and we are just having the best time of our lives. The Winter Jam tour has been such a great atmosphere. Each act is really good and everyone is really nice. The camaraderie and the fans have been great on this tour. You know to see everyone lined up in the cold and rain waiting to see us is a real blessing.”-Peter

     Chris Rohman, lead guitar for Sanctus Real mentioned specifically how moved they have been by all the fan support on the Winter Jam tour. He also said it is kind of like a big circus with all the people that are on the road.
“You know sometimes it gets pretty crazy out here, there are like 140 of us on this tour.”

     Since Matt and Chris are from Toledo Ohio, they were very excited to bring the tour home to Columbus and Cleveland in January. For those who missed the first two buckeye visits, the tour will be returning to Cincinnati on March 17th.

     In 1996 Sanctus Real began their rise in the industry with three independent albums followed by five album releases on the Sparrow label. They have been writing songs for the tenth release expected to be out sometime next fall. As their albums have increased in maturity I asked Chris, what the main theme of the new album was about.

“I don’t really think the theme is different, but it’s just our lives and how they are taking shape as we get older. You know, all the things you learn along the way as an adult and parenting and it’s just all that taking shape with what God intends for us to become.”-Chris

     Jason Roy, lead singer for Building 429 found God’s intentions taking shape as he stepped into a worship leader position at his home church. Like many of his fellow tour mates, being an extension of ministry out of their home church on the road is naturally a testimony not only to their home church, but also to the body of Christ in general.

“Our worship team at church actually sings background on our latest album Listen To The Sound. I really feel like everything I learned from becoming lead worship in church has crossed over into the album and hits a chord that everyone can relate to. Many of the songs are from actual situations people have faced and struggled and tried to find their way out of. God does not want us to stay in that state of defeat. We have to fight for our families and grasp onto our faith.”-Jason

     The general consensus of each individual I spoke with was spot on with why I believe the Winter Jam Tour continues to thrive and succeed both with audience attendance and hearts and lives being transformed over to the grace and mercy of Christ.

     Every single last one of them have the armor of God prepared in musical formation and their feet shod with the gospel. The core purpose and intention of the desires of their hearts is to see lives changed through the transforming power of salvation. None of them see themselves as Christian artists, famous singers or Dove award nominees. They consider themselves blessed vessels for the Glory of God to be revealed in this day.

     Peter Furler summed it up fairly nicely after I became emotional during our interview setting aside a moment to express my gratitude for how his music had ministered to me for over a decade. He was appreciative but quite humble refusing to take any credit for what God did through the messages. I asked him if there was anything he would like to say to others who had been ministered to through the music he produced that he does not always have an everyday chance to speak with. His response, “Oh boy. Well, your life is just as important to God as mine is. You know He created the Heavens and the earth. We all have a certain roll and a certain place and when we find that role, we find joy in that. My role happens to be a singer and a songwriter, you know. Focus on God and His word and seek Him. Find where your joy is at in Him.”

     Ironically in that moment, he managed to minister to me again and I doubt he even knew it. None the less it was a blessing to get a chance to speak with some of the most humble Christians I have spoken with and each one of them were inspiring and motivating. I believe if you have an opportunity to make it to the Winter Jam tour this year you will have a phenomenal experience. Check the website for tour dates.      The Christian music industry over the last five years has witnessed the birth of many R&B and hip-hop artists rising to the number one spot on the Christian music charts. Recently slaying this arena is long time choreographer, lyricists and dancer, Mr. Deshon Bullock. Better known in the playing field as Shonlock and his crew Da Monsta.

     You may see his footprints through many platforms, like in the production of Mandisa’s hit song Love Somebody, which he co-wrote. Shonlock has also worked on projects and shows with Aaliyah, Arrested Development, Kierra “Kiki” Sheard, and Nicole C. Mullins to name a few. His most talked about involvement has been with Christian music veteran Toby Mac, who hired him to travel with him and be a show choreographer and dancer.

     This warm spirited and gifted young man has created many wonderful messages for a generation of youth and adults that are geared more toward the message with a bass beat and lyrically challenging groove. Arrow/Universal records knew what they were doing when they signed Shonlock in 2009. His #1 single Something in your eyes has made him a strong contender for a nomination in the 2012 annual Dove Awards. I found out during our interview he will be alongside two of the 2011 Dove Award nominees  on tour this fall, which is a treat you don’t want to miss!

     If you are curious what CD this multi-gifted hip-hop artist chooses to listen to, this interview will be very eye opening for you. You will learn what inspires this young man to stay true to his faith and yet still show the world you can have fun as an artist. A person just trying to stay straight or simply a teenager facing the difficult scenarios surrounding them on a day to day basis.

Me: “So, tell me how you guys came up with the name of your group?

Shonlock: “Oh, yeah, Da Monsta. Our band name kind of signifies what I feel the body of Christ is as a whole. You know that needs to be our mentality. We are a massive army for Christ”

Me: “So, how many members make up Da Monsta team?”

Shonlock: “Let’s see we have Monte, Robert, Shatier and Dakari. Really great guys to work with. We always have a lot of fun.”

Me: “Yeah, I was watching a video you had where you and one of the band members were working on a song, he was playing his guitar part.”

Shonlock: “Yeah, that was Robert.”

Me: “He seemed like he was really laid back is he always like that?”

Shonlock: (Laughing) “Oh Robert, no that was very unusual.”

Me: “Who would you say your musical influences are or anyone that influences you and what CD are you currently listening to?”

Shonlock: “Really, Toby Mac has been a great influence on me both musically and spiritually you know, he is always there for me if I need to talk you know. No matter if it’s about music or not. As far as what CD I am listening to right now, (grinning with hesitation) Taylor Swift.”

Me: “Really? (grinning myself) I really did not expect that for some reason kind of threw me off on that note.”

Shonlock: “Yeah, I know a little strange huh? A Christian hip-hop artist listening to a country girl. But you know I am big on lyrics and I can just relate so much to the stuff she sings about. It’s really a great album.”

Me: "It’s obvious that God gifted you musically in many ways, how long ago was it that you surrendered your gifts to Him for His purposes?”

Shonlock: “Well, let me see, it was about ten years ago. You know I traveled a lot and worked with a bunch of different artists. I moved out and away from those positive influences and stumbled a bit and wasn’t really living it you know?

However, about eight years ago when I moved back to Nashville I started working with the Katinas, and some other great groups. You know God just pierced my heart. Toby Mac just so happened to be at a show where I was working with Nicole C Mullins and he seen me just flipping off the speakers and he said, “I got to get that guy”.

Me: “That is awesome, what would you say your favorite scripture is, if you had to pick one?”

Shonlock: “Wow, there is just so many. I guess I would have to say John 10:10 comes to mind. You know He wants us to live life to the fullest. Loving Him and having fun doing it. You know and share that happiness with others.”

Me: “So how often do you and the band practice and do you all struggle with each other at all?”

Shonlock: “Right now we usually try to have rehearsals at least twice a week. You know we have been together for nine years so you know struggles yeah. But prayer really helps with all that. You know we try to keep each other accountable. Especially when we are out on the road, we will not leave each other alone. Not everyone has the same abilities and weaknesses so we just keep each other’s back. But prayer really is a lot of it.”

Me: “So speaking of struggles. What do you think as a Christian you feel you battle with the most?”

Shonlock: “Funny you should ask that cause it recently happened to me again. You know when God tells you to do something or talk to someone and you feel insecure cause you don’t really feel like they are going to want to hear you?

Then God keeps putting that person in your path and you still keep shying away from it? I would say that is my biggest struggle, cause later I always see that if I am not obedient He will send someone else to do it and I need to just start doing it because it’s a window of opportunity that He is opening.”

Me: “So, what are your plans for touring this year? You got any big plans? You think you will swing through Ohio?”

Shonlock: “Actually yes, we are getting ready to do a fall tour with Group 1 Crew and Rapture Ruckus. I think we are going to be hitting the mid-west too. If not on that tour then we will be coming through I think for the Alive Festival.”

Me: “Music has a huge impact on the youth today that are facing so many different struggles, as a role model, what advice do you have to encourage the future generations?”

Shonlock: “Wow, you know follow the passion God has put in their heart. Whatever passions they may be turn them over to God. He will take them and mold them and use them for good. Just because you give your heart to God it does not make you a square. You can still have fun as a Christian."

Me: “Have you been a part of a ministry in your local church?”

Shonlock: “Actually yes, I saw a lot of young men coming forth quite a bit and they really did not have anyone to talk to them about the real struggles they would face you know as a young man. So I started this group up called NOTASIN. That actually stands for Nobles Out To Achieve Something Incredible Now. It gives them someone to talk to and helps them succeed in life.”

Me: “As an artist, how would you define success?”

Shonlock: “You know I think it is the impact that you leave with people. You might have missed it if all you do is talk about yourself. It comes down to the impression you leave of God with that person.”

     The Father of two boys a six-year old and a 19th month old and married to a Pastors daughter, Deshon comes across as a very fun loving southern young man. I doubt anyone who has the blessing of crossing paths with him will not feel the love of Christ from his spirit. Don’t forget to check out Hello, which was released to radio stations on April 20, 2011 it is bound to be an incredible addition to his already chart topping creations! When this Monsta shows up, the only mashing that is going to be happening is on the face of the devil.

42nd Annual Dove Awards Interview With Group 1 Crew

Chatting it up with Manwell, Blanca and Pablo AKA : Group 1 Crew

     The 42 Annual Dove Awards brought this trio two wins for Christian Hip Hop Album of the Year with "Outta Space Love" and Song of the Year with "Walking on the Stars". Group 1 Crew might not be what your praise and worship team will be singing at church during Sunday morning service, and you most likely will not hear one of their songs playing on the southern gospel radio station. However, it would be a fantastic gift to get your teenager, or your grandchildren. Not to mention if you just want to cut loose yourself and go for a nice drive just to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy the goodness of God.

     I was able to sit and chat with Blanca, Manwell and Pablo hours before they received the news of the victory. We discussed some controversial issues and some very heartfelt dreams and goals that each of them carry on their sleeve. If I had to pick one scripture that sums this group up in a whole it would be Romans 13:10 

"Love does no wrong to one's neighbor. Therefore love meets all the requirements and is the fulfilling of the Law."

     In the seven years they have been singing together, they have created three hip hop albums influenced by life, love and God. In 2007 they released their first "self-titled" 

album. 

The following year they released “Ordinary Dreamers”. 

     Their Latest Release, 

"Outta Space Love” was birthed in 2010. This album has seemed to open more doors and cross more paths reaching people f

urther with just living a good clean fun life in a way that is ruffling the feathers of some "Religious Folks". 

Being the free spirited fun loving songwriters they are, I was curious if they ever disagreed on the production of new music.

 

Pablo: Oh yeah all the time!

Manwell: Always! It's not that difficult though. It's not like we are going to argue about it or anything. We don't really care about that.

Pablo: We all have such different musical influences so we just sort of throw all the options out there and pick the best one.

Me:“How long does it usually take for you guys to make a video production of a song?”

Manwell: We made three videos in three days.

Me: Really? Wow! That is pretty impressive.

Manwell: The hardest part about a video is the story boarding and concept. We directed “Live it up” (official video below) ourselves, so we presented the director with the idea and literally shot by shot what it was going to look like the whole way through. 

Me: It really looked like you guys had a lot of fun making that video.

Manwell: Yeah. It was really easy to shoot. It’s just concept that is the hardest part.

Me: Are you guys involved with any charity organizations?

Manwell: The group is a World Vision artist. I have a child that I have personally adopted through that outreach. I also run a non-profit organization called Revolution1. It is something I started a couple years back and we do a lot of things to help people. We were just able to give a car away. My fiancé and I are kind of doing that under the radar right now and doing it ourselves. We try to present on video and show people what is being accomplished. A lot of our tours right now are revolved around other organizations so I cannot really let people know about it while we are on the road. However, we are getting ready to do our own tour now, so hopefully more people will become aware of it and realize the potential with us.

Me: So, is there a certain place that people can go to learn more about how to make a difference through your organization?

Manwell: Yeah, they can go to Rev1.org and the whole concept is just very simple. Everyone can afford a dollar to help someone out. A lot of other organizations, even though they are great, are like 35 dollars a month and people get scared of that because it becomes another bill to them. With Rev1 it is just a dollar and then they can tell someone else about it too. If everyone did that you could raise so much money to help others. Imagine what could happen if everyone gave two bucks!

Me: So what is your main focus on when it comes to the organization as far as helping people?

Manwell: There are so many areas around the world that need help. We just bought a well we are going to give to someone in a different country. We bought some goats for some families, and school supplies for children in Africa. We are really trying to help with the sex trafficking epidemic.

Me: One of the more sensitive subjects that I wanted to talk with you about is how you have had a tough time being accepted as a Christian band. For you it is more important to be real and try to spread a positive message to reach out to the lost, instead of singing to the saved. Has that affected your faith at all?

Manwell: I don’t think it has affected our faith. I think it makes me understand why the more and more people do not want anything to do with Jesus. It makes me feel bad for Christians as a whole. We will never turn away from our faith. You know it is not going to make us bitter. Churches are not perfect. Some people have ideologies that are based on complete assumption and something has to be hurting inside them to get on a public board and just be malicious toward another Christian.

Me: What is one example of a time when you were upset by someone passing judgment on someone you cared about?

Manwell: I remember getting into a long debate with this pseudo Christian once for just bashing Skillet for wearing make-up and 

black clothes. He said there was no way they could love God because the Bible says that we are not to show an ounce of femininity. I said wait a minute, you cannot Americanize the Bible. In many cultures around the world, make-up is the thing for guys. Just because it’s not manly to wear make-up in America doesn’t mean you can go over into their camp and say Jesus said they cannot wear make-up.  

You know with the Egyptian culture it was the noted difference between a slave and Pharaoh. It was just so frustrating because we toured with Skillet and we saw John backstage with his wife and his kids and being so nice to everyone and cool with us and real genuine.  The fact that some people have God in this little box is really what makes me sad. As a passionate band hoping to open people’s minds up to different moves of God in music I think we just need to get out there more.

Pablo: We have gotten a lot of tension from Pastors. But there has also been a lot of support from Pastors and youth Pastors as well who have embraced our music. They are realizing that hip-hop is very influential. We were just at Fish Radio station and they were telling us that they used to not play Toby Mac. Now, Toby Mac is one of the most popular on the radio station. It used to be that Christian rock music was “of the devil” but people have started to embrace that as well. It takes a group and a movement and the communities in the churches to see how Christian hip hop influences the teenagers in the church for them to say, let’s give it a shot!

Manwell: For us I think it is hard you know, waiting for everyone else to catch up. You know, we don’t have time to wait for people to figure out whether we are Christian or not. There is so much to do. There is a world that is so much bigger than that. I think that is what I appreciate so much about the secular music world. To them it is say what you want and do what you want as long as it sells we’re good. I appreciate that! In ours it’s like if you don’t do this, or if you don’t say Jesus this many times or it’s not in this format or it doesn’t sound like this it’s not Christian. You know we start to question what we are being led to share and it’s crazy. We are scared of our own people you know? They are supposed to be happy for us and supporting us, we are afraid that they are going to say negative things about us.

Pablo: That’s not God you know? That is only here in America. Overseas for instance in Amsterdam they play everything together on the radio. They play Kanye West and then right after that they will play Toby Mac. After Toby, they will play Natasha Beddingfield. If it’s good music, they love it. We will play at a bar or wherever, it doesn’t matter to us what people are doing. If they start singing along to our songs, that is where we have to let the spirit of God begin to work through the music and touch the heart of people. Just like kids listening to music in their car with their friends. A lot of times the Christian parents take away that opportunity because we don’t say Jesus at least eight times in our song. You know what I am saying? So, they miss that opportunity to share of God’s joy and abundant life we share in our music with others.

Me: You guys have a really positive uplifting message in all the songs that I have listened to. It just makes you feel really happy. It was just really good music! One of my friends listens to hip hop, and he doesn’t listen to Christian music. I sent him your video “Live it up” on face book and he really liked it you know? So I am going to give him your CD.

Manwell: See people don’t get to hear stories like that. It’s not about how many times you say Jesus in a song.

It’s about how you live and how you love and these opportunities to share it with other people. We write our own songs, so what we sing about that is what we are going through and facing. You have to be real with people to get their respect where they can relate. That wouldn’t have worked if you sent a Chris Tomlin video to your friend you know?

Me: Yeah that is true! I personally love Chris Tomlin, but my friends that don’t listen to Christian music would not get that.

Blanca: It has a lot to do with what people are going through at different times in their lives. If they are going through tough times they will listen to Meredith Andrews or something and they might be open to it, but our music is just so relevant to where they are at any point. You know it’s just like our lives.

We sing about what we are going through with the different emotions that we face or season that we are in. People don’t want to hear about how you are just going through this struggle or that struggle.  It’s nice to hear about getting together with your friends and having a good time. You want to hear about relationships and waiting on that special guy or girl. Normal every day stuff that we all go through. We should be able to sing about normal day to day things and still be considered a Christian band. What we sing about is real and true and relevant.

Manwell: If you read Psalms there are certain ones that are just like, life stinks, it sucks, I am mad and you are not real the end. If you write a song like that all of sudden you are Satanists. Or Song of Solomon “her breasts are bountiful and they are pleasing.” You can’t write a song like that. If I took Song of Solomon and wrote it word for word and put a beat behind it they would think I was the devil. I am sorry I am passionate about this stuff. I could talk about stuff like this for hours.

Me: Oh Yeah! Don’t apologize. It frustrates me too as a Christian. You can go to talk to people sometimes as a Christian and it seems because the way the world has seen God through the portrayal of some who profess faith they will not think they can have a conversation with you unless it is about the Bible.

Blanca: Yeah, that is such a good example. Even putting music aside, you just want to talk about normal stuff with people. We have put ourselves in a bubble pretty much that you can’t sit with your girlfriends as a Christian and talk about real struggles or real questions like real stuff you are dealing with in your relationships. You just feel like it has to fit this certain category and when you go outside of that it just makes some people uncomfortable or they become judgmental and it’s like automatic shut down.

That is kind of how we feel sometimes with our music, when it comes to the reaction of certain people. Like the only thing we should be approved to sing about as a Christian band is God.

Manwell: The two most taboo subjects in the church are sex and money. And those are the two top reasons that couples get divorced. No one knows how to handle sex and no one knows how to handle money. Different principles are taught on money and when it comes to sex they are just told not to do it. How can people tell you not to have sex, when it is like one of the most beautiful gifts that God gave to us? People don’t need to be taught not to do it. They need to be taught how to do it and just to wait until the right time. A lot of young Christians are going into marriages scared to death cause they are on their honeymoon and they feel like they are about to be prostituted. It’s not a bad thing! We need to learn about stuff like that for our spouses. It’s something that needs to be talked about. It’s all about the timing, everything we do as a Christian comes down to timing. You don't ever hear anyone preaching that.

Me: Yeah I think most people get uncomfortable talking about subjects like that.

Blanca: I mean it makes me uncomfortable talking about it right now (laughing). But it is true you know.

Me: Yeah, it is true we could all be wiser in some situations. So what is one thing as a group or on your own that you hope to accomplish in the near future?

Blanca: I am in a season of my life right now where God is really showing me my voice. Not with just music but about what He has put inside of me. He has birthed this strong pull toward young women in my heart and I am beginning to develop that more. Being on the revolve tour has really made that come alive and I want to expand that. I started a boutique on our website about fashion and girl stuff, and who knows maybe I will make some clothing down the line. It's really fun to do stuff like that.

Me: I know I seen where you are really into clothes. I thought it was really neat to see the pictures where you pull certain girls out of each show and take your picture with them. I know that probably really makes them feel good about themselves and appreciated.

Blanca: Yeah, it's usually teenagers. We are at a place where society is so strong on how you should dress and what to wear. I see things that I really like but I wouldn't actually wear it because I want to stay modest. I also want to stay true to who I am as well, so finding a balance how to do that the right way helps me. So hopefully I can help other young women find that balance but still share their love for fashion as well.

Pablo: I am getting married in August, so we are really looking forward to that. My fiancé loves the beach so we got a special spot picked out for that. I also have a strong passion to try to help individuals discover who they are. You know to help them find their purposes and assignments in life. One of my biggest interests right now is One Alliance Group. It is a network of people or leaders who are all trying to improve self development in people. Right now I am still trying to define what it is. My heart really longs to see people accomplish their calling in life and reach a new platform so that they can help others do the same thing. Kind of like a pay it forward program.

Manwell: I would like to see us collectively as a group get to that next level. We really need to define that for ourselves. One of the greatest things a Pastor ever challenged me to do was to define success before you pursue it. As long as we can keep doing this because people are buying our music, then that is success. However, when you are an athlete you are not a pro until you are in the NFL. For us as a group, there is nothing like competing with the best of the best. And though the Dove Awards are great, the best of the best are at the Grammy's. I feel like we are good enough to be there. It's easy to get your message across when you are respected in your talent. I feel we could reach so many more people with what God has blessed us to do if we can just get to that next level.

Blanca: Just seeing where God has taken us since we first began. You know for me He has really laid on my heart to reach out to young women. With Pablo, he really wants to reach out to leaders and people in position and all that increases with the platform that we have been given. So, the bigger the platform, the more people we can reach. In doing so, God begins to turn those dreams He has placed inside of us into a reality. We have more resources to go after it.

Manwell: We need to have more influence! Music is going to become secondary. It is going to be the love that we share with people. I think the dreams in our hearts are just going to go on. We have to be known for more than just music.

Me: So you want your impact as individuals to be stronger. To share the love of God with all you come in contact with because of the position that you are in?

Manwell: Yes!
